Stefan Posse, PhD
Dr. Posse is a tenured Professor in the University of New Mexico’s Department of Neurology. His secondary appointment is in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He is a member of the UNM Cancer Center and holds an affiliate professorship at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.
Dr. Posse obtained his PhD in 1990 at the University of Berne in Switzerland with Dr. Walter Aue and from 1991 – 1994 pursued a Fogarty postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health with Dr. Chrit Moonen and Dr. Denis Le Bihan. He subsequently established an MR laboratory at the Research Center Jülich, Institute of Medicine in Juelich, Germany as Head of MR Research. In 2000 he joined Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan as Director of the Functional Neuroimaging Laboratory. In 2003 he joined the University of New Mexico School of Medicine as Director of MR Research of The MIND Imaging Center. Since 2006 he is Director of the Human MR Imaging Research Laboratory in the Department of Neurology.
Dr. Posse is known for his pioneering work in developing real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and high-speed magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) for applications in Neuroscience and Clinical Research. His research interest is to develop novel diagnostic MRI methods for characterizing human brain function and physiology with the goal of improving individualized treatment strategies and prognosis based upon patient specific functional brain mapping. His current NIH funded research is focused on advancing presurgical mapping in patients with brain tumors and epilepsy.
Dr. Posse’s specialties include:
- Technology development of MRI data acquisition and reconstruction on clinical MRI scanners
- Biophysics research of BOLD contrast functional MRI
- Technology development of real-time task-based and resting-state functional MRI
- Technology development of high-speed MR spectroscopic imaging of metabolites
- Neuro-oncological imaging research in patients with brain tumors
